The black squirrel tour is part of Willingen's MTB routes for children. These are so well networked and signposted that parents and children can decide during the tour which route they want to take and how long the route should be.

Important: The requirement profiles are only guidelines - these can of course vary from child to child. Children should not ride alone. Mountain bikes are required in any case. Riding the routes is at your own risk. In some places, hikers or car traffic may be on the same routes.

The Black Squirrel routes are for advanced MTB children who are confident enough to tackle the freeride routes and want to improve their fitness.

Information

Directions

First of all, the tour is signposted with the red squirrel and leads us through the beautiful Strycktal up to Hochheide. We pass the Mühlenkopfschanze and continue along the idyllic course of the Itter stream. At the end of the valley, there is a real climb up to the Hessen/NRW state border. We follow the boundary stones to the right as far as the "Zum Streit" refuge, where the trail splits between the red and black squirrel tours. The black squirrel route goes past the refuge in the direction of Ettelsberg. Via the Lütteke Feld and the Große Grube, where a coal pile has been reconstructed. This is a reminder that a lot of charcoal used to be produced in our area, which was needed for ore extraction. At the top of the Ettelsberg, a detour to the mountain lake, landscape playground or a climb up the Hochheideturm tower is well worthwhile. A visit to Siggi's Ettelsberghütte hut is only recommended during the week; it is not suitable for children on Fridays and Saturdays. From there, it's a short walk back to the starting point of the freeride routes. Three more routes will be available from spring 2018. Children can bike the current route down into the valley with a little care.

Equipment

We recommend a helmet, functional, weather-appropriate cycling clothing, backpack food, sufficient fluids (water, tea), air pump, repair kit and multi-tool.
